Our retirement community provides scheduled activities throughout the day, including many evening hours. Volunteers are an important part of the care giving team. In addition to assisting with the scheduled activities, volunteers share one-on-one time with residents. They help read and write letters, send cards and just take extra time to talk.

Sometimes new volunteers worry about what to say. Simply chatting about everyday activities puts both the resident and volunteer at ease. Often words are not necessary; residents respond to the warmth of a smile and a reassuring hand. Joining in the recreational activity or expressing interest in a resident's life opens the flood gates.
Volunteering enriches not only the lives of our residents but that of the volunteer as well. We have found that if a volunteer comes twice, they're hooked. Not every resident will always remember a volunteer's name or understand why they are there to visit, but the look of appreciation in the resident's eyes lets the volunteer know their time and compassion made a difference.
If you are thinking about volunteering, please consider one or more of the activities listed below as a way to make a difference. We have opportunities for you, your family, community, church, or youth group.
